Atturaya was one of the founders of the first Assyrian political party, the <a href=\"/wiki/Assyrian_Socialist_Party\" title=\"Assyrian Socialist Party\">Assyrian Socialist Party</a>, and a prominent early advocate for <a href=\"/wiki/Assyrian_independence_movement\" title=\"Assyrian independence movement\">Assyrian independence</a>. He studied medicine at a Russian missionary school in <a href=\"/wiki/Harpoot\" title=\"Harpoot\">Harpoot</a>, graduating in 1915, and perhaps then went on to study in Russia itself. During <a href=\"/wiki/World_War_I\" title=\"World War I\">World War I</a>, he was recruited as a medical doctor into the <a href=\"/wiki/Imperial_Russian_Army\" title=\"Imperial Russian Army\">Imperial Russian Army</a> and he held various positions and offices, both medical and political, before returning to Urmia in 1916 as a political officer and the head of an army hospital. In Urmia, Atturaya organized the <a href=\"/w/index.php?title=Assyrian_National_Committee_of_Urmia&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" class=\"new\" title=\"Assyrian National Committee of Urmia (page does not exist)\">Assyrian National Committee of Urmia</a>, which sent young Assyrians to study in Russia. Inspired by the <a href=\"/wiki/February_Revolution\" title=\"February Revolution\">February Revolution</a> in Russia, Atturaya early in 1917, together with the other Assyrian activists <a href=\"/wiki/Benjamin_Arsanis\" title=\"Benjamin Arsanis\">Benjamin Arsanis</a> and <a href=\"/w/index.php?title=Baba_Parhad&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" class=\"new\" title=\"Baba Parhad (page does not exist)\">Baba Parhad</a> founded the Assyrian Socialist Party, which prominently advocated for the creation of an independent Assyrian state in the <a href=\"/wiki/Assyrian_homeland\" title=\"Assyrian homeland\">Assyrian homeland</a>, closely allied to the nascent <a href=\"/wiki/Soviet_Union\" title=\"Soviet Union\">Soviet Union</a>. In April 1917 he published the <a href=\"/wiki/Urmia_Manifesto_of_the_United_Free_Assyria\" title=\"Urmia Manifesto of the United Free Assyria\">Urmia Manifesto of the United Free Assyria</a>.\n</p><p>Atturaya also partook in other Assyrian cultural efforts. He also founded Assyrian libraries in both Tbilisi and <a href=\"/wiki/Moscow\" title=\"Moscow\">Moscow</a> and as a poet wrote numerous poems dedicated to the Assyrian cause and Assyrian culture. On Atturaya's initiative, the Assyrians of Tbilisi organized the <a href=\"/w/index.php?title=National_Council_of_Transcaucasia&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" class=\"new\" title=\"National Council of Transcaucasia (page does not exist)\">National Council of Transcaucasia</a>, an organization founded to help Assyrian refugees during the <i><a href=\"/wiki/Sayfo\" title=\"Sayfo\">Sayfo</a></i> (Assyrian genocide).
